Student Housing
This fall, more than 29,000 students entered the halls and classrooms of the University of Manitoba. Of those, more than 5,000 international students are in the student body. Since 2010, international student enrollment at the University of Manitoba has nearly doubled.
Students and residents have expressed concerns about the lack of affordable housing for students near the U of M. A 2017 report concludes that up to 150 illegal rooming houses could be operating around the University of Manitoba and that some international students seeking housing are living in unsafe conditions due to shortages.
I have begun to explore the possibility of an affordable housing initiative in collaboration with the province and federal government; conduct research to uncover more information on the number of students living off-campus in rooming house situations; and partner with the Fort Richmond University Heights Residents Association to address this issue.
