Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg invites residents to come in and cool off in civic facilities during regular operating hours, as high temperatures are forecasted over the next few days.
City facilities that are normally open on weekdays and weekends are available to act as ‘cooling areas’ where the public may come in for relief from the heat and have access to drinking water.

Safety Tips for Hot
Weather
Residents are reminded to follow these safety tips to stay healthy during
periods of high heat:
- Drink water (before you’re thirsty) to stay hydrated.
- Seek spaces in the shade or out of the heat and reduce physical activity at mid-day.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Shower with cool water or use a cool damp cloth or compress against the skin.
As well, when using additional cooling appliances such as portable air conditioners, residents are reminded not to overload electrical circuits as this can create a fire risk. Use dedicated circuits, and plug the unit directly into a receptacle without the use of extension cords.
Residents are also reminded to never leave people or pets unattended in parked vehicles even for a few minutes, as temperatures can rise quickly and create a dangerous environment.
Be sure to check on seniors and other vulnerable people, particularly those who may be isolated from friends and family, as well as young children and pets who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses during high temperatures. Please ensure pets have adequate access to water and cooler areas, including shaded or indoor areas.
