Winnipeg, MB – Today, City Council approved the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Program. The program will provide funding to community groups to strengthen local crime prevention and community safety efforts by promoting the exchange of information between residents, and helping build closer relationships between communities and the Winnipeg Police Service.
“A hybrid approach to community safety and crime prevention is needed to build a more inclusive and safer city for families,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Preventing crime makes a community safer, and it also helps complement the resources provided to the Winnipeg Police Service. Not all areas of Winnipeg face the same safety and crime prevention challenges, and this Community Safety and Crime Prevention Program will provide community groups access to resources to help them address safety issues they feel are priorities for their neighbourhoods.”
Through the 2019 Budget process, Council approved a transfer of $100,000 annually for four years, from the Civic Initiatives, Promotional and Protocol grant program, to support this crime prevention initiative.
2019 fund applications will be approved to a maximum of $5,000 per application, with preference given to applications that focus on preventing illicit drug activity.
The program’s 2019 application intake period runs from October 1 to October 31, 2019. It’s anticipated that the funds will be awarded by November 30, 2019, and successful applicants will be required to expend the awarded program funds by November 30, 2020.
